Exa Infrastructure has signed an agreement with Ultranet to build a 175-kilometer fiber optic route linking two of Italy’s major data hubs: Milan and Genoa. This new route is designed to support high-performance data traffic. It will extend Exa Infrastructure’s Genoa Metro network, connecting key cable landing stations (CLS), including Lagaccio, Equinix, and Genoa Open CLS.
Once completed, Exa Infrastructure plans to offer an open landing platform for subsea cables and five additional routes out of Genoa, further enhancing Italy’s connectivity.

Steve Roberts, SVP of Network Investments and Products at Exa Infrastructure, emphasized, “This initiative aligns with Exa Infrastructure’s commitment to strengthening network resilience and expanding data transmission capacity, backed by its extensive experience in subsea and landing infrastructure.”
Claudio Centofanti, Chief Commercial Officer at HGM, Ultranet’s parent company, added, “Most internet data traffic will flow through submarine cables, which are becoming a critical success factor. Telco operators will require increasingly advanced, cyber-secure technologies and infrastructure, seamlessly connected via P2P to data centers, edge data centers, and virtual data centers.”

Milan, one of Italy’s leading data hubs, benefits from several data centers and significant submarine cable connections such as BlueMed and 2Africa, positioning it as a central point for European and Mediterranean data traffic. Genoa is a rapidly growing market supported by multiple subsea cable landing points and data centers operated by companies like Sparkle and Equinix.
Ultranet, with an established network spanning over 12,000 km across Italy, will play a crucial role in facilitating this strategic connection between Milan and Genoa.
This collaboration marks a significant step in enhancing Italy’s digital infrastructure, reinforcing its position as a key player in the European and Mediterranean data exchange.
